Overcome Your Greatest Challenge (Part 1)
Overcoming our greatest challenges is not easy but it is possible.
Take a minute to bring to mind the greatest challenge in your life right now. Is it something in your family, something at work, something in your spiritual life, or perhaps your finances? Is overcoming this challenge leaving you feeling stuck?
When asking my clients about overcoming their greatest challenge they usually think the first step lies in doing something. However, if you knew what to do you probably would have done it already and you wouldn’t be stuck.
The first step lies in changing your perception of how you view the situation.
When I first found out that we were going to have a daughter with special needs it was a very difficult time in my life. I was wrestling with a myriad of questions and I often wondered if I had what it took to be her father. That is the question we most often ask when facing our greatest challenge. Do I have what it takes?
As the pregnancy due date drew closer I knew that I had a choice to make. It was the most life-altering choice I have made in my life thus far. That choice was that I could either view my daughter’s life as a burden or I could view it as a blessing. No one else could make that choice for me. I had to make that choice and continually make that choice every day to view my daughter’s life as a blessing. It was a choice I would later refer to as the blessing choice. It is the choice of transforming your burdens into blessings. It is a choice of perception.
Perception is the intellectual faculty of how you see things. Not with your physical eyes but with your mind’s eye. Dr. Wayne Dyer once said of perception that it is “change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” When applied to the blessing choice I believe it is change the way you make choices and the choices you make change.
As you reflect on what your greatest challenge is and what is keeping you stuck, the first step requires a change in perception. Start looking at your challenge in a new way. Ask different questions that will lead to different answers and help you get unstuck.
Next week we will talk about the next step to overcoming your greatest challenge.
